Unsure how often your various fire protection systems need to be inspected?
Here is a quick reference guide for the various inspection frequencies of Fire Sprinkler Systems (NFPA 25) and Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (NFPA72).
1. NFPA 25 – Fire Sprinkler Systems
There are seven possible inspection frequencies for a Fire Sprinkler System. They are:
- Daily
- Weekly
- Monthly
- Quarterly
- Semi-Annually
- Annually
- 5 Year
The term “inspection” can refer to a visual check of system components (most commonly associated with daily inspections), all the way to thorough inspections where valves are opened and systems are checked for corrosion, obstruction, and performance. The frequency and thoroughness of an inspection is dependent upon the type and system(s) being inspected.
In depth inspections and testing require a licensed professional, as they know the various tests to perform and have been professionally trained to test each system. In addition, they are aware of any specialized tests that must be performed per town, city, or state regulations.
If you have questions or concerns regarding the required frequency of your fire sprinkler systems, contact your insurance company, local fire department, or your sprinkler installation company.
2. NFPA 72- Fire Detection and Alarm Systems
There are six possible inspection frequencies for a Fire Detection and Alarm System. They are:
- Initial/Reacceptance
- Weekly
- Monthly
- Quarterly
- Semi-Annually
- Annually
Similar to NFPA 25 inspections, the frequency of a fire alarm system inspection depends on the type of equipment, along with local requirements. For example, building systems not connected to supervising station are required to be inspected on a quarterly basis, while systems connected to a supervising station are required to be inspected on an initial and annual basis.
Visual inspections of led’s, fuses, primary power supply, and interface equipment, can be performed on a weekly basis, and in addition to the required inspection interval for the system or type.
If you have questions or concerns regarding the required frequency of your fire sprinkler systems, contact your insurance company, local fire department, or your fire alarm installation company.
Note: This guide is an abbreviated version of the overall codes. It is important you refer to the NFPA 25 and NFPA 72 for a complete list of devices, test frequencies, and testing procedures.
